About your chambers:

No5 Barristers’ Chambers is one of the largest sets in the country. We have developed a reputation for breaking new ground and for being a forward-thinking set.

The Employment Group at No5 is ranked as Tier 1 for employment law in both Chambers UK and Legal 500, with many members featuring in those directories as leading individuals. A number of our barristers also hold judicial posts including in the Employment Tribunal.

No5’s employment barristers are regularly instructed in cases which are at the cutting edge of employment and discrimination litigation. The Employment Group has been involved in a number of important cases over recent years, in the High Court, EAT, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court. We have strong links with public sector clients, including NHS Trusts, local authorities, police institutions, and the Government.

At the junior end, we have a busy caseload of Employment Tribunal hearings. As a probationary tenant, you can expect to be in Tribunal hearings most days, with a combination of case management hearings, ½ day and 1 day preliminary hearings, and straightforward final hearings such as unfair dismissal and wages claims, with a view to progressing to multi-day whistleblowing and discrimination hearings in a short period of time.

There may also be the opportunity to develop a split practice, depending on business need in other groups.

About the candidate:

We are looking for a dedicated and hard-working individual who is willing to take on work that is outside their comfort-zone and develop as an advocate. Although experience of employment law and Employment Tribunal practice and procedure during pupillage is essential, we will provide training and support to the successful candidate on an on-going basis to ensure that they are capable of progressing to more complex employment-related cases including whistleblowing, discrimination, and employee competition claims in the High Court. We encourage junior tenants to develop their experience through pro bono schemes including the ELAAS scheme in the EAT.

We expect junior tenants to be pro-active when it comes to marketing activities and business development. We encourage tenants to publish articles, contribute to journals and textbooks, deliver lectures and seminars to clients, and attend networking events.

We have offices in Birmingham, London, and Bristol and probationary tenants are free to choose to work from any of our offices. The successful candidate will be expected to appear in person in any court or Tribunal within our primary geographical area (Midlands, London and South East, and South West), as well as Wales and the North of England on occasions.

We are recruiting with a view to the successful applicant being offered a full tenancy at the end of the probationary period.
