Bar associations and law societies from around the world have gathered in London for the Opening of the Legal Year today to discuss the rule of law, as it continues to come under increasing pressure globally.
The Opening of the Legal Year brings together leaders of the legal profession from across England and Wales and the world. It provides an opportunity to recall the foundation of the justice system within which we operate – that all of us should benefit from the law and have the protection of a fair, impartial court when we need it.
The gathering comes at a time of growing concern over attacks on judicial independence and increasing threats and harassment faced by lawyers worldwide for doing their jobs. Judges and lawyers must be free from interference and fear of attack so they can fulfil their role in serving the public and ensuring we are all treated equally before the law.
Chair of the Bar Council Kirsty Brimelow KC said: “The Opening of the Legal Year brings lawyers and judges from across the world together in London. It is a powerful reminder that our commitment to justice and the rule of law transcends borders. As lawyers and judges face growing threats around the world, the Opening of the Legal Year is an important moment. It is where we join hands to uphold the rule of law. The Opening of the Legal Year also is a joyful time of memory, tradition and collaboration whilst reminding us of our shared purpose and our responsibility to make justice real."
Law Society of England and Wales president Mark Evans said: “We are delighted to welcome colleagues from around the world to mark the Opening of the Legal Year. At a time when the rule of law faces growing challenges, events like these demonstrate the collective strength of the legal profession and our shared commitment to defending justice for everyone.
“The justice system is a vital public service which helps our communities to thrive by ensuring we all - even the powerful - play by the same rules. But it does not do this on its own, it needs us all to actively maintain and defend it. By working together, we can ensure justice is available for everyone when they need it most.”
