Information for Providers

The following table describes the key stages for chambers and Authorised Training Organisations (ATOs) when using the Pupillage Gateway application system:

October 2018 – May 2019 Timetable

Monday 1 October 2018 Chambers and ATOs wishing to advertise and use the application system can subscribe and make payment via the Member Services team. Please call 0207 611 1329 or email PupillageGateway@BarCouncil.org.uk. If you are new to the system you will have to submit the chambers’/ATO’s account information form to PupillageGateway@BarCouncil.org.uk.
October – November 2018 Upon receipt of payment or an invoice being raised, the Bar Council will activate your account. Chambers and ATOs can then upload or edit pupillage vacancy advertisements and submit for approval. Returning Chambers and ATOs will be able to log in to the system using the same login details from previous years.
Wednesday 28 November 2018 All approved Gateway pupillage vacancy advertisements will be published and available for prospective applicants to browse (for chambers that do not recruit through the Gateway, adverts are live all year around). During this period, applicants will have access to an online practice application form to help them in their preparations.
7 January 2019 11:00am The submissions window for Pupillage Gateway applications opens; applicants may start, edit and submit their applications. Chambers and ATOs will not have access to applications until the submissions window closes.
7 February 2019 The submissions window for Pupillage Gateway applications closes; no further applications or amendments to applications will be allowed. Chambers and ATOs can begin to download and assess applications and communicate with all applicants regarding the status of their applications. The recruitment process is continued with those who have been successful in the first stage.
February – May 2019 Chambers and ATOs will sift paper applications, shortlist applicants, and conduct interviews or assessments. They should communicate with applicants and update their statuses via the Pupillage Gateway (see the Pupillage Gateway User Guide for guidance on how to do so).
7 May 2019, 09:00am Offers of pupillage are made through the system. For applications made through the Pupillage Gateway, offers of pupillage must neither be made nor accepted before 09:00 on 7 May 2019. The BSB Pupillage Handbook advises that, as a matter of good practice, pupillage offers should remain open for 14 days. BSB Pupillage Handbook Please note that the Bar Standard Board’s Pupillage Handbook states that ATOs using the online system for recruitment of pupils must not make offers to candidates in advance of the stipulated date and time.
